Mother and Son Arrested For Cocaine

On May 14, 2008, just after 8 p.m., New Bern police were called to a home at 2011 Waters St., in reference to possible drug activity. 

When officers arrived, they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from behind the residence, and saw a black male suspect who appeared to be packaging marijuana for distribution. When the officer called out to the suspect, the man ran into the home. New Bern police followed the suspect inside the residence and after a brief struggle took him into custody.

While officers were in the home, they saw additional evidence of narcotic activity. Police obtained a search warrant and recovered more than three pounds of marijuana, crack cocaine, ecstasy pills and large sums of cash.

Mother Arrested In Shelby On Drug Charges While Child In The Car

SHELBY, N.C. — It was supposed to be a routine checkpoint, designed to catch traffic violators on Wyke Road in Shelby, but instead police say they caught Alisha McEntyre with a marijuana cigar in the ash tray, a lot more drugs packaged to sell and her 18-month-old daughter in the back seat.

According to the police report, McEntyre was pulled over because she didn’t have her seatbelt fastened, but when the officer got there, he noticed a strong smell of marijuana.

The officer writes that when he questioned her about the smell and she told him, “I smoked a blunt earlier and that one was in the ashtray.”

Capt. Jeff Ledford said officers soon learned there was more than just a smoked cigar.

Person Of Interest Named In Deacon’s Murder

DURHAM, N.C.—The Durham Sheriff’s Department has named Tory Jarel Nelson as the person believed to have killed Deacon Charles Forest Davis, 89.
 
Davis was found brutally murdered in his home along 2913 Nellowood Street on September 26. 
 
According to Sheriff Hill, there have been very few leads in the case. They are hoping to find and speak with Nelson.

Warrant details SBI search of nonprofit in Wright case

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A warrant filed in Wake County shows that an investigator looking into an allegation of loan fraud against a state representative searched a Durham nonprofit’s financial records.

State Bureau of Investigation Agent Rufus Williams searched the North Carolina Minority Support Center. He searched for financial records and other documents under the control of Representative Thomas Wright and a foundation that the Democrat from New Hanover County helped create.

Holiday indicted in Kornegay slaying

A Nash County grand jury on Tuesday indicted a man accused of stabbing two women inside a Rocky Mount church a month ago.

Tommy Lee Holiday, 30, a homeless man, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and two counts of armed robbery.

Holiday is accused of attacking Debbie Kornegay, 58, and Eve Beasley, 60, on Oct. 18 while the two were preparing food inside Lakeside Baptist Church for the Meals on Wheels program. Kornegay died from her injuries, and Beasley still is recovering at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

“She’s doing great,” said Billy Beasley, Eve Beasley’s son. “She had her last surgery Monday, and she’s got family with her.

“She can talk, and they get her up every day so she can sit in a chair.”

Greenville man faces charges for May robbery

Officers arrested a man in connection with a common law robbery and assault incident that occurred in May.

After several months of investigation, Greenville Police Department detectives served an arrest warrant Friday for Mark Eldridge Joyner, 36, of 105 Toby Circle, Apt. 5.

Joyner was charged with common law robbery and assault for the May 14 incident in the parking lot of the BB&T bank, 543 S. Evans St, according to a police news release.

Detectives believe Joyner approached the victim, a 29-year-old female employee of the nearby McDonald’s restaurant, before she entered the bank with a deposit bag and punched her in the face.

Jacksonville PD seeks shooting suspect

Jacksonville police are looking for a suspect in a shooting on Maypatch Road at around 3 a.m. this morning.

A Jacksonville man, who asked not to be identified, was shot in the left elbow by an unknown gunman while sitting in his car in front of Tarheel Taxi, said police Capt. Tim Akers.

“(The driver) was talking on his cell phone when he saw a black male wearing a dark hoodie walking up to his car with a semi-automatic handgun,” Akers said. “(The driver) drove off, but the suspect shot him in the arm.”

Yadkin Road bank robbed

The Fort Sill National Bank on Yadkin Road was robbed at gunpoint about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Three armed men entered the bank at 6243 Yadkin Road and displayed their handguns, according to Jamie Smith, spokeswoman for the Fayetteville Police Department.

The robbers left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, she said.

Witnesses described the robbers as three black men between the ages of 18 and 25.

Soldier pleads to two rapes, other crimes

A Fort Bragg soldier admitted in military court this morning that he stalked neighborhoods looking for homes to break into, and raped women that he found inside.

Spc. Menkaura A. Moss pleaded guilty to two rapes, a sexual assault and other crimes that occurred in Spring Lake and Fort Benning, Ga., early this year.

Under his plea arrangement, Moss agreed to a sentence of 60 years in custody. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years.

Moss, 22, described during his court-martial this morning how he walked through neighborhoods wherever he was staying. He looked for homes he could break into — those with unlocked doors or windows. If he found women inside, he sexually assaulted them.

Three teens arrested in clerk slaying

(11/16/07 –EDGECOMBE COUNTY) - Authorities arrested three teenagers and charged them in the murder a Edgecombe County convenience store clerk.

It happened Thursday night outside Princeville at Exum’s Grocery on Highway 33.

The sheriff says the 61-year-old store clerk was alone inside when a group of teens tried to rob him. Several shots were exchanged. The clerk tried to run after the gunman, but collapsed in the store yard.

Officers found Ahmad Nimer laying in the grass with gunshot wounds to his upper torso and hand.

He was rushed to the hospital– but died a few hours later.

NAACP Opposes Gang Task Force

The civil rights group fears police will engage in racial profiling.

Greensboro, NC — The NAACP is taking aim at Greensboro’s new gang task force.

Members of the civil rights group fear police officers will focus more on putting minority youth in jail.

They would rather see a gang prevention plan.

The NAACP wants to deal with causes of gang activity such as poverty and the drop out rate.

NAACP member Deena Hayes said, “One thing, I think we need an analysis here. What happened here in Guilford County? How have we gone from gangs in the single digits to gangs in the double digits? What’s happened around economic development? We’ve had major employment losses in this county for some time.”

Man arrested in Duke University grad student attack

(11/09/07 — DURHAM) - Police arrested a man they believe robbed and assaulted a Duke University graduate student.

David Hill was wanted on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and robbery.

Police arrested him Friday afternoon in Durham at the Howard Johnson Hotel on Hillside Road.

Rocky Mount stabbing suspect faces a judge

(10/23/07 — RALEIGH) - The man charged with stabbing two Meals on Wheels workers in Rocky Mount faced a judge Tuesday morning as the District Attorney announced his office will seek the death penalty in this case.

The hearing this morning lasted only a few minutes. The judge reviewed the charges and a prosecutor from the District Attorney’s Office announced they plan to seek the death penalty in the stabbing death of 58-year-old Debbie Korengay.

In the courtroom, Tommie Holiday, 30, said nothing and paused before acknowledging the judge when asked if he understood the crime he’s facing - first degree murder charges in the death of Debbie Korengay and first degree attempted murder in the repeated stabbing of Eve Beasley.

Man Charged With Arson For Northeast Charlotte Apartment Fires

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they believe James Gladden is responsible for starting two fires at the same apartment complex.

Gladden was arrested and charged with arson early Saturday morning after fire officials responded to an apartment fire on West 26th Street just after 1a.m.

The fire was put out quickly and no one was hurt.

Cumberland Co. Deputies Seize Cocaine, Gun, Money

Spring Lake — Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputies, assisted by North Carolina A.L.E. agents, confiscated thousands of dollars in illegal contraband from a home in Spring Lake Friday morning.

Investigators raided the home at 303 Rutherford St. following numerous complaints from people working and living in the area.

Deputies reported seizing more than 64 grams of crack cocaine, a stolen handgun and close to $10,000 in U.S. currency from the residence. Two children who lived in the home were turned over to the Department of Social Services, which will be responsible for their well-being.

Four people were charged after the raid.
