Soldier pleads to two rapes, other crimes

A Fort Bragg soldier admitted in military court this morning that he stalked neighborhoods looking for homes to break into, and raped women that he found inside.

Spc. Menkaura A. Moss pleaded guilty to two rapes, a sexual assault and other crimes that occurred in Spring Lake and Fort Benning, Ga., early this year.

Under his plea arrangement, Moss agreed to a sentence of 60 years in custody. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years.

Moss, 22, described during his court-martial this morning how he walked through neighborhoods wherever he was staying. He looked for homes he could break into — those with unlocked doors or windows. If he found women inside, he sexually assaulted them.

Officials arrest suspect in rape case

Pitt County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Thursday for the rape of an 18-year-old woman nearly seven months ago.

Ferrell Donte Kenlaw, 25, 338 Linda Drive, Washington, N.C., was arrested shortly before 5:30 p.m. and charged with first-degree rape, two counts first-degree sexual offense, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree burglary, according to a news release.

Reports indicated that at 5 a.m. on April 23, the 18-year-old victim and her sister were sleeping in a River Creek Mobile Home Park residence, near the Beaufort County line, when the victim awakened to the sound of someone forcing open the front door. A black male entered her bedroom, put what felt like a gun to her head, raped her, and asked for money before exiting through the rear door, the release stated.

Lumberton city councilman charged with rape

(10/23/07 — LUMBERTON) - A Lumberton City Council member is locked up in Kentucky, charged with rape.

John Cantey, Jr. is being held in Louisville. He’s the manager of a rap group and was in a town near Louisville for a concert.

The Jefferson Town Police chief says an 19-year-old woman went to Cantey’s hotel room after a concert Friday night.

She later told police she has been raped. Cantey is scheduled to be in court November 1st.

Man charged in rape, beating with 2-by-4

Police have arrested two men in connection with a brutal Wednesday morning rape in which the victim was hit several times in the head with a 2-by-4.

Jequan Sloan was arrested Thursday morning — a little more than a day after the assault in Grier Heights. Police charged him with attempted murder, rape, sex offense, kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sloan, 27, has an extensive arrest history, according to court records. In 2002, he was sentenced to more than a year in prison for selling cocaine. The court has also banned him from several east Charlotte apartment complexes.

Former School Rabbi Accused Of Sex Acts With Student

Greensboro, NC — Greensboro police are preparing to charge a former school Rabbi for having sex with a student.

According to Lt. Brian James of the Greensboro Police Department David Alan Stein, a former director with the American Hebrew Academy, is accused of having sex with a now 16-year-old male.

The alleged sex acts happened during the 2006/2007 school year on the AHA’s campus.

Attacker beats woman with 2-by-4

A woman was raped and beaten with a 2-by-4 early Wednesday morning in southeast Charlotte’s Grier Heights neighborhood, police said.

The 29-year-old was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, where she is being treated for serious head injuries. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said investigators had been unable to interview her.

Nobody had been charged in the attack late Wednesday.

Police described the suspect as a black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks, who was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt. Two witnesses told the Observer he is also thin, about 6 feet tall and was wearing oversized clothes.

Man charged in attack at motel

A Waxhaw man has been charged in a sexual attack last month at a south Charlotte motel.

Glenn Vinson, 42, is accused of walking up to a stranger at the America’s Best Value Inn on Archdale Drive, groping her and then chasing her while exposing his private parts, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

He is charged with sexual battery, assault on a female, indecent exposure, public masturbation, and false imprisonment.

Man Charged With Raping, Torturing Woman

Raleigh — A Wendell man was being held on a $3 million bond Friday on charges he tortured and raped a woman over two days last month, police said.

Danny Thomas Goldston, 49, of 264 Wood Green Drive, is charged with five counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sex offense, and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

A woman told police that she and a friend were sleeping outside Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, at the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue in Raleigh, on Sept. 15 when her friend was stabbed and she was abducted. She said she was eventually taken to a wooded area and was repeatedly raped and assaulted.

NC appeals court upholds sex offender ban in town parks

(10/02/07 –RALEIGH) - The state Court of Appeals says the Town of Woodfin can enforce its ordinance preventing registered sex offenders from entering a public park.

David Standley challenged the 2005 law that prohibited him from walking through the town’s parks. The town passed the ordinance after sex offenses were reported in or near some parks.

Two of the three judges on the appeals court panel agreed with a lower court ruling upholding the ordinance. Judge Rick Elmore says the ban is designed to protect the health and safety of town residents and doesn’t bar Standley from enjoying the outdoors.

Judge raises bond for accused sex offender

A district court judge has revoked an earlier bond and set a new one for a Jacksonville man who is accused of committing a sexual assault while out on bail from a previous sexual assault charge.

Leonel Humberto Saballos, 35, of Broken Oak Court, is in the Onslow County Jail under a $700,000 secured bond. He would have to present the full amount of his bond to the court to be free prior to his court date, which has not been set. He was ordered by the court to surrender his passports or other documents he could use to leave the country, said Dewey Hudson, district attorney for the 4th Prosecutorial District.

Saballos was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 2 and charged with breaking into a home and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. He had been charged in June with 14 other sex charges and was released July 9 on a reduced bond, law enforcement officials said.

Teens Forced to Perform Sex Acts, Smoke Marijuana

(09/18/07 — SALEMBURG, N.C.) - Three people are charged with holding 10 Sampson County teenagers at gunpoint for about 6 hours, forcing the hostages to smoke marijuana and perform sex acts on one another.

Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton says the men held six high school-age females and four males hostage at the home of one of the victims early Sunday.

Twenty-year-old Terrance O’Brian Parker, 20-year-old Wayne Bernard Fleming and 21-year-old Orman Rashan Carroll are charged with 10 counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and 10 counts of second degree kidnapping. Parker and Fleming also face gun charges, and Parker is charged with first degree forcible sexual offense and injury to real property.

Thornton says Parker and Fleming fired a total of four shots into the floor of the home, but nobody was injured.

Teen Sexually Assaulted In Her Northeast Charlotte Apartment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teen was sexually assaulted by a man who may have been casing her home days before, police said Wednesday.

The 18-year-old girl told officers she awoke around 4:30 a.m. to find a man had pushed open her window, put his hand inside and was touching her in her bedroom at an apartment on Deergreen Lane in the Mission at Harris Pavilion Apartments. Just as she realized what was happening, the man took off.

The teen said she ran to her mother’s bedroom, and when she described the man, her mother said it sounded just like a man who had knocked on the door two days before and had asked several questions.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area to look for the man. He’s described as a black man about 6 feet 2 inches tall and about 30 years old.

Principal Resigns Amid Harassment Allegations

Henderson — The principal of Southern Vance High School has resigned amid allegations that he sexually harassed a teacher.

James Pickens stepped down as principal during Monday night’s Board of Education meeting.

The teacher filed a civil suit in Vance County Superior Court alleging that since March, Pickens has made sexually suggestive and degrading comments to her at school.

In the complaint, the woman alleged Pickens grabbed her, pulled her to him, forceably kissed her and fondled her.

The complaint also claimed Pickens has a history of committing similar acts against women that he supervises.

Woman Attacked, Raped In West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said a woman was driving home from a night out with friends when she got into an argument. The driver of the vehicle let her out of the car along Mulberry Road in West Charlotte around 2 a.m.

The woman told police that as she was walking home two Hispanic males pulled up along side of her in a green pickup truck. The two men got out of the truck and hit the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious.

Police said that when the woman awoke she was in a wooded area and she was partially undressed. The woman called a friend to pick her up and take her to a local hospital.

Police Still Digging Into Past Of Man Charged In South Charlotte Sex Assault

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man accused of a violent attack in a south Charlotte park is no stranger to police, and those who stopped him from fleeing the scene believe he knew what was in store for him.

Kelvin Jones, 41, is charged with kidnapping, robbery and sexual battery. Police say he approached a woman sitting on a bench at Park Road Park on Wednesday, pulled out a knife and forced her behind a building where he robbed her of her cell phone, sunglasses and keys and demanded that she touch him sexually. When she refused, police say he dug the knife into her more forcefully.

Hollie Martin still remembers the woman’s screams for help when she broke free.

“She was yelling, ‘Help me, help me,’” he said.

Martin and other bystanders in the park stopped the suspect in his tracks.

“We went after him, and he said, ‘You got me, you got me,’” said Hollie Martin.
